First day of Sign & Sing today!
Although I’ve been teaching Kindermusik classes since 2007, today was my first foray into the world of Baby Sign Language when I held my first session of “Sign & Sing” at Acrosports Kids Center. It’s a small class for now, but the parents are enthusiastic, and the babies are adorable.
My own kids (who are in Kindergarten and 2nd Grade) were still out of school today (darn CCISD inconvenient inservice day) so they were there, too, and a little less than helpful, but even they had fun learning some of the signs.
Today we learned a lot of good signs that are “See a Lot/Do a Lot” signs, and some “Highly Motivating” signs.

If you’d like to bring your child to try a free class, please call the Acrosports office and they can sign you up for a trial class. If you’re ready to enroll, you can do so online at this page.
In a Kindermusik Sign & Sing class (developed by Signing Smart™), we give you the tools and knowledge to communicate with your child using American Sign Language. Through songs and play, you’ll both learn signs for words like “mommy” and “eat,” and you’ll know if he wants “more” “milk” and when she’s “all done.” This research-proven signing class for hearing children speeds language development, eases frustration, and enhances long-term learning abilities.
Acrosports: Tuesday 11:30 am – $55/mo + $65 materials*
*Does not include Acrosports Registration fee, which is separate.

Private lessons…
So my job is awesome. I love it. I have been teaching music since 2001, and Kindermusik since 2007. If my students and parents are telling the truth, I’m pretty good at it. I have been so blessed to be able to have work to do that I love doing.
I love my family, too. My goal has always been to be at home with my children as much as possible, and my work has allowed me to do that more than many parents are able to, and I am grateful for that. However, at the beginning of this school year, I faced a difficult decision: Both of my children would now be in school full-time from 8-3:30 every day, and the majority of my teaching schedule was from 3:30-8 pm. That meant that there were days that I wouldn’t see my children at all, and that was not acceptable to me, or to them. So something had to change.
In August, I resigned from my private teaching job, and began to focus on Kindermusik exclusively. Unfortunately, at that same point, the economy finally crashed into my Kindermusik business, and my enrollments dropped dramatically. Suddenly, I had lost the income from my private lessons, which was expected, and also lost half the income from my Kindermusik classes, which was not. So now I am brainstorming to try and find ways to earn some extra money, especially with the holidays fast approaching.
I considered working retail part-time, but the truth is, that would take so much more time from my family, and I can make a much better wage doing what I love best – teaching music. Because of this, I am planning to open back up one night a week to private students. I haven’t decided which night it is yet, but if you are interested, please let me know.
I will also be offering a beginner piano class using the Mayron Cole EZ Keys method, if you have a young beginner who shows an interest in piano, but piano class kids will be enrolled in Kindermusik for the Young Child concurrently, so you will have 2 days of classes per week.
FOL Friday: Stop and Start
I have meant to keep up with the idea I had a while back of posting every Friday with the core Foundation of Learning (FOL) statement for this week, and so here it is!
Baby enjoys “stop and go” games. The element of surprise delights her at first. As she becomes familiar with the activity, she will enjoy anticipating the stops and starts, understanding the structure of the music in much the same way as she understands spoken language prior to speaking it.
Your toddler finds stop-and-go games exhilarating, too. Activities which encourage the child to move or stop moving in response to a cue help the child develop inhibitory (internal) control. The ability to control body movement is an important step toward developing self-discipline.
As the child grows to school age, these stop-and-go games change to become more complex. Now we can add in movement in response to the music they hear. By inviting a movement response to a musical cue you can help children to coordinate auditory and motor skills at specific moments, control movement through focused listening over time, be involved at different levels, and make free, expressive movement choices.
All of these things seem like fun and games to the children in class, but in reality, we are preparing them to listen. They learn to listen and follow directions when they hear, “Shake, shake, shake … and stop!” As we practice this skill through repetition, the advantages are numerous. The child learns to pause and think for a moment when they hear someone say STOP. How many times have you wished your child would stop when you say stop? The Kindermusik classroom provides an ideal opportunity to practice these kinds of critical skills, in a safe and loving environment.
